Essex River Cruise Trip Report

What a perfect day to take a cruise! Even if it wasn't in our Miatas. The cruise on the Essex River is a terrific experience for historians, bird-watchers, naturalists and photographers, as well as those who want to get away from the city rat race and appreciate nature. That included us.

Ten Miatas arrived in Essex from the North, South and West early AM, including one driven by Sheila. Sheila took Al seriously when he wouldn't "let" her drive his Miata and suggested she get her own. We enjoyed coffee and muffins
before embarking on our journey. The narrated cruise was advertised as a 2-hour trip, but we lucked out with extra time on the river due to high tides.

The excursion was in a covered vessel which protected us from the scorching sun and 94 degree heat. The boat meandered on the tranquil river and past acres of unspoiled scenery. One really could appreciate the sights and
natural beauty. The birds really put on a show and we had the pleasure of viewing many species such as blue herons, gulls and egrets. We past salt marshes, white sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, sand dunes, gorgeous private
estates and many pleasure boats, including some "interesting" passengers. Amazing how the glaciers so many years ago scraped away the landscape to form such a beautiful area. Our chatty captain lectured us on local history
and local gossip. The 8-mile tour included Hog Island where the movie "Crucible" was filmed a few years ago. All the binoculars were focused at all times. Mostly focused on nature, but sometimes on the passengers in the
private boats.

After our cruise, of course out to lunch. A seafood dinner was the logical place. We enjoyed a wonderful meal in Tom Shea's function room. No surprise, but most people ordered Essex clams. The views were spectacular
and it gave us another viewing of the surrounding beauty.

After our nourishing lunch, Deb and Jim led us on a 30-mile "mystery ride" through Beverly, Ipswich, Manchester and Hamilton. Naturally, all were Miata roads, and what beautiful roads they were. This was the first trip that Deb
and Jim led, and what a wonderful ride they organized! After the ride, where else but an ice cream stop at White Farms in Ipswich. After lunch, most weren't sure they could or would eat until the next day, but that promise was
quickly forgotten. The portions were unbelievably large - and delicious. A place to remember for the next time.

Many newer members of the Club attended this event, and we welcome you. Your enthusiasm and high spirits are contagious, and we all enjoy and appreciate your participation. We hope to see you at most, if not all, of the upcoming
Miata events.

Thanks again to Priscilla and Janet and Deb and Jim for planning and coordinating such a fun and relaxing day. All the attendees thoroughly enjoyed the event, and look forward to a repeat performance.
