Factory Five Racing Tour
It was only November 2nd; it was early on Saturday, 9:15 a.m. to be exact. And even though the sun was out, it was cold! Tops up, at least for a while. Thirteen cars left the Holiday Inn and swiftly navigated the traffic south on Route 495. At the intersection of 495 and 105 two more cars joined the caravan. All was well for a while till one car started losing water. Even with all of the "weekend mechanics" the smartest thing was to search for more experienced help. Knowing the area and a good mechanic, Les stayed behind to help and he and Al joined up with us after leaving the car behind with a broken heater hose. When we reached Factory Five there were many others waiting patiently for us and for the tour to start. 37 attendees in all; quite a good turnout for a late in the season trip. Jim Schenck, an R&D Engineer at FFR, introduced himself and his Company. He described how the company got started, how they are succeeding, and showed us the steps they go through to put together the kits that can be ordered to build the Cobra. There were many questions about the process, additions and modifications to the kit. And of course in the showroom there were five beautiful cars, including an exciting yellow race car. Many of the attendees secretly wished for a chance to take that one around a corner or two, just to test the power and feel the wind rushing by! I guess we can dream, can't we? While some had other obligations and left for home directly from the factory, the rest of the group headed to Oliver's in Dennis on 6A for lunch. This turned out to be quite a nice pub-like place for the group to enjoy the local brew and generous-sized sandwiches as we talked about the morning's tour and how much fun it would to build a FFR Cobra Replica. After lunch a slightly smaller group of die-hards headed off for more driving, ending up at Fort Hill in Orleans. This was a beautiful spot that overlooked the ocean at a spot just above the elbow of the Cape. The setting sun was just perfect for a Kodak moment. We managed to gather a very cold group to stand almost still so we could immortalize the moment. Thanks Les for this terrific suggestion! The author has not heard about the outcome of the red Miata with a broken heater hose that had to be left behind, so the story is not quite finished. But we all hope that everything went well, and that the rescuer was well rewarded! It was good to see so many people at this event; what a great time we all had. Many thanks to Bob for putting together this interesting trip. (Now my problem is where am I going to find the time and the space to put one of these little babies together? It's got to have a really cool custom paint job, how about a silver car with green racing stripes??
