December 17th, 2009

Greetings MMC members,

The weather is getting colder, the Christmas lights are coming out, the Patriots are making a run for the playoffs (well maybe) and the Miata will be heading into storage. As I look back at last year's season I am reminded of twisty roads with fun destinations and great people. Even though the Miata will be in storage soon it does not mean our club will shut down for the winter. On December 6th our planning meeting was held to prepare for next year's events. Keep an eye on the Web for our upcoming schedule as we have some exciting things planned. We also have our annual Holiday Party being held on January 16th at the Hilton in Mystic, CT. Be sure to sign up as this is an event not to miss. Check the web for details.

One of my favorite sitcoms of the 80's was Magnum PI. The show featured Tom Selleck playing the role of Thomas Magnum a private investigator working security for the Hawaiian estate of Robin Masters. Magnum was an ex Vietnam Vet and as one of his perks he got to drive the red 308 GTS Ferrari. I had always admired this car and imagined myself driving it one day. Well my dream almost came true.

While in Fort Lauderdale a few weeks ago we went out for dinner and as we pulled into the restaurant I immediately saw a red 308 GTS aka the "Magnum P.I. Ferrari" in the parking lot. As I was admiring the car the owner came out and we chatted for a while. He asked me if I would like to sit in it, and before he finished the question, I was already opening the door. Even though the car is bigger than a Miata the cockpit is surprisingly small and tight. You definitely feel like one with the car. As Debbie snapped some pictures I could hardly wipe the grin off my face. Although I was not offered to drive it just to sit in this famous car was thrilling enough.

Don't worry, after scanning the auto ad's for 308GTS's, the Mazda Miata will still be my choice for a fun affordable sports car. But one can always dream!
